Vickie is a Canadian artist that comes from a long line of talented artists. Her first love has always been horses. She has worked at a 30 year career in the equine field including hunter/jumper, dressage, riding instruction, driving, broodmares and foals, breaking youngsters and working with race horses. This “hands-on” approach is evident in her equine art where every detail from tack and equipment to conformation, the landscapes in the background and the barns they live in, is captured in intense detail.
Vickie enjoys portraying high realism in graphite, coloured pencil, charcoal, watercolour, acrylic and mixed medium. Besides horses, her other favourite subjects are still life, animals, landscape, floral, peeling paint and rust. Vickie is open to stepping outside the box and attempting the less familiar… pushing the boundaries as an artist. She uses photo reference, but is not a slave to them. The camera is clicking away from early spring till the snow flies, collecting reference material that captures that perfect light, that fleeting moment in time… for those many drawings and paintings to come. Vickie will adjust lighting, colour, adding this, removing that, and combining several images to create a more interesting composition.
Vickie accepts commissions and enters competitions here in Canada and also in the USA. Her work has been published in newspapers, books and magazines. She has won numerous awards nationally and internationally. Vickie teaches live art classes and on Zoom, to budding artist of all ages.
Vickie is currently a member of Colored Pencil Society of America where she has signature status and Federation of Canadian Artists.
Artist Statement:
“My realistic art, whether painting or drawing, fulfills a passion for capturing that fleeting moment in time… That split second where the light is perfect… That image that makes me gasp at the visual impact of it! While I use my own photo reference, I am not a slave to it… I change things, add things, remove things. I am often told that the art is better than the reference… Mission accomplished!”
